find fun, peace & creative joy making Swedish Folk Art with Tina Rawson
Välkommen!
A devotee of the fine art of Swedish folk art, I provide classes in the beloved "kurbits" style. It's an easy and fun way to explore color and shapes, as well as the history of the art and a little bit about Swedish culture. You will quickly learn this craft from the 1700's and how to apply it for fun, relaxation or to inform your own artistic work. It's easy and relaxing to play with paints on paper and we can introduce more mediums as we grow. Have fun making art with us!
Thank you for coming to the Scandinavian Cultural Center in West Newton. I'm sorry that some of you were rushed. I hope that you will send me your pictures or share them on my Facebook page at www.facebook.com/tina.rawson.art
The next event is going to be fantastic and much less rushed! We had to rush because others were coming, but we have the full day at Adelynrood on June 15th! Sign up for the Midsummer Madness Art Retreat today!

Kurbits Class 1
Fun, expressive, colorful art that can be done by anyone. Want to learn the basic Swedish Folk Art aka "kurbits" design? This is the best place to start. I will give you an overview of the history of kurbits, then we will make a simple gourd design using this colors that you chose. I give you a template and we will practice some swoops and learn some basic techniques before you finish your masterpiece.
Class outline and cost
I give you a brief overview of the history of Swedish Folk Art as we paint together. It's a lot of fun. I give you a template to use, you recreate it and paint your first swirly piece on paper aka "kurbits" in the colors of your choice. The class time is one and a half hours to complete, and another half an hour if you wish to chat and enjoy "fika" (coffee with friends.)
The class costs $50 per person, or $60 online for a group. Call 978-395-5567 or email tinastart2art@gmail to set up a time at the 14 Cedar Street Studios in Amesbury, or to host it at your own lodge, house or gathering.
Materials for ONLINE
This is an easy class to get materials for, if you have acrylic paints and brushes you should be good to go! You will also need a palette, vellum, nice paper sized 13 x 19" is ideal, paper towel and water. I will send you the template in advance of the class. Please get large paper that you will be proud to display.
I will give ideas on how to frame the piece, it will be worth it! I look forward to showing you how to make your first kurbits from the Swedish Folk Lore tradition. We can either set up a zoom, or soon I'll have an online class for you to access and complete at your own discretion alone or with friends.
Your masterpiece
I give you a template and we will practice some swoops and learn some basic techniques before you finish your masterpiece. You will use the colors of your choice. If you wish to embellish it or do it differently you are welcome to do so. Art is meant to be expressive of you and your ideas, feel free to be you!
Lettering
Pretty lettering is often part of the kurbits design, if you wish we can follow up with calligraphy at the next class or you can go ahead and add words as you wish. This is from one of my favorite poems by Emerson which states "Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air!" I love that idea.
What you get
Upon completion you will have a beautiful wall hanging to display (I offer suggestions on framing) and a certificate of completion similar to this one will be sent to your email. I hope that you have so much fun that you will stay in touch and want to learn more too!
More ideas
I painted this goat using kurbits techniques combined with realism on canvas. For more advanced painters the sky is the limit and you can add this fun folk art to your own art. It makes for great presents too! Please see my website if you wish to commission or buy one of my pieces: www.tinarawsonart.com. Tack!
